Formula One PROP Tour Returns in 2010
Seattle, Washington (October x, 2009) – The Formula One PROP Tour, which conducted the top level of outboard powerboat racing in North America from 1995 through 2002, will return to the water in 2010.
Formula One PROP Tour was formed and directed successfully by the late Gary Garbrecht, a long-time team manager for Mercury Racing, advisor to Outboard Marine Corporation and a boat racing pioneer. He was a vice president of the Union of International Motorboating and was instrumental in the formation of the current world Formula One boat racing series.
The series is being revived by three veterans of the marine industry and boat racing, Greg Jacobsen of Seattle, Washington, Bob Schubert of Richmond, Texas, and Wayne Worthy of Nixa, Missouri. All three have experience in boat racing as drivers, team owners and administrators.
The Formula One PROP (Professional Racing Outboard Performance) Tour expects to conduct six to eight races next season for the Formula One, Formula Two (SST-120) and Formula Three (SST-45) classes of outboards. The races will be sanctioned through the American Power Boat Association (APBA), which has overseen boat racing in the United States for more than a century.
The 2010 Formula One PROP Tour season will open in Naples, Florida, next March.
Worthy, who has served as executive director of two previous racing series, will serve as executive director of the Formula One PROP Tour. The tour will be guided by a board of directors consisting of a member from each racing team. The board will form steering committees for competition, finance, race management, legal and promotional activities.
“We’re reviving a very successful boat racing circuit,” Worthy said. “We thank the Garbrecht family for allowing us to carry on the traditions of the Formula One PROP Tour.
“Bob and Greg and I are taking the helm as caretakers, but the organization will consist of all the teams who have supported the sport,” Worthy said. “Our goal is returning our sport to its previous level of activity with sites, schedules and cost structures that make sense for promoters and teams.
“Our intention is conducting professional events with professional officials and rescue crews. This will be a team-based series drawing on the experience of people who have run racing series successfully and who will call on the input of the teams that make boat racing possible. We want to have fun and provide an excellent, cost-effective racing series. We intend to work inclusively with our friends in the Formula Two and Formula Three classes for the betterment of the whole sport.”

With a 20 knot current, trees the size of big rigs, heat the same as Houston and a right hand turn, it was amazing we survived Evansville. We had no major incidents on the course. The pits was a different story. Scattered teams, launch ramp blocked by a stage proved tricky throughout the weekend. The air show was fantastic! Sport Rescue was asked to fulfill another task in picking up the all women jump team. These ladies would jump from their perfectly good airplane twice a day and land just in front of our boats. Our hotel turned out to be a Casino, no need to explain any further! Then for me it was off to Bay City. As for the team, they had a stressfull flight home, sorry guys!
Bay City was wonderful as usual. Cool weather, no major accidents (weird for Bay City) Some really great racing especially for our home team Johnny Fleming taking the win in the SST 120 class! Many Thanks to Bobby Chaffin & Crew for the wonderful food and hospitality. Miss Teva had to be rescued when she was bitten in the lip by a Boxer. Bet she will think twice before kissing another dog in front of her man again!

Amongst the windmills, prairie dogs, and flat lands sits Buffalo Springs Lake. A beautiful location for a Sport Race. Blake Terry rolling his Tri Hull over in the second turn was the only incident we had.

Well we survived! We want to thank everyone that made this event successful. The 4 classes of boats kept us really on our toes and tested us to the fullest! With 5 Blow overs, 2 Barrel roll overs, 2 Engine Fires, and 8 bouy's, Heavy rain & lightening, all we can say "Thanks for an eventful weekend!"
Well, we went to test out the boat and spent most of the time working on the motor. Seems that the OMC does not like the restrictor. I want to thank everyone who helped us get this boat out on the water. In the Finals, Jonathan was the only one who did not jump the gun, and ended up taking 1st place until inspection. We got DQ'd for fuel. To much Ethanol!!! Dad's fault! Still had a great time!
Monday the 19th...Well, as expected, The 2009 Pickwick Challenge will not happen. Here is the statement from the promoter...
Greetings to All,
It is with much disappointment that I inform you that we will be unable to produce the 2009 Pickwick Challenge Powerboat Race & Festival. Due to the currenteconomic conditions, we have experienced a drastic decrease in available sponsorship dollars. The PWC staff and I have discussed several options and alternatives, one of which would be to downsize the event to one that would require a much smaller budget. However, we have decided that this would only diminish the high standards of competition that we have set over the past five years and damage the reputation of the event.
I would like to thatnk all of our past Sponsor Partners, Organizing Committees, Law Enforcement Groups, Boat Racing Organizations, and the hundreds of Volunteers that have made our past events successful. It is our hope that the economy rebounds in 2009 which would allow for us to plan for the revival of the Pickwick Challenge in 2010.
Kindest Regards, Fred Tull, President

Dear Valued and Loyal Outboard Race Customers:
Current economic conditions have led us to the difficult decision of eliminating all on site outboard race support, effective immediately. The Mercury Racing outboard race support truck and personnel will not be attending any events throughout the 2009 calendar year. Mercury Racing sponsored contingency funds and the Mercury Racing Champ power head and gear case lease programs are canceled for 2009 as well. Contingency funds earned throughout the 2008 season will be honored. We appreciate all you have done to promote the sport of outboard racing overall and your support and dedication to Mercury Racing products in particular.
Please be assured our lack of physical presence at the races and the cancellation of financial support doesn't mean we are abandoning outboard powerboat racing altogether. Champ and SST 120 parts and accessories are still being manufactured.
We are working closely with the APBA in their efforts to launch an all-new one design class of racing for the new Mercury 60 EFI Formula Race four-stroke outboard. The green racing class is destined to become an entry-level platform for the next generation of North American OPC competitors - much like the highly successful Scandinavian Mercury Formula Four outboard tunnel boat racing series.
Jimmie Merleau's 2008 Champ-F2 championship proves Mercury's direct-fuel injected 2-stroke OptiMax technology has a place and future on the racecourse. Development of the next generation OptiMax 200XS SST race outboard continues at a brisk pace. The new engine is anticipated to be available in time for the 2010 race season.
Please contact our sales department toll free at 866-637-2234 with any questions you may have.
We appreciate you business and continued support in these difficult times.
Sincerely,
Jeff Krueger

We had our club meeting at Darrel's Lake House in Livingston this last weekend. I want to thank him for hosting this for us. I would also want to thank our cook Mike...AWESOME FOOD!
To all that could not attend, we discussed certain issues that we are facing this 2009 Season. Race sites that probably will not happen, new possible race locations, new class of boats, ie: Hydros, the economy and how it is affecting the sport we all love. Although, times are tough, those who attended felt that our Region 15 Sport Racing Club is worth fighting for. I want to thank John Schubert for all that he does and lets support John and Sport Racing by becoming a Sport Member. He cannot do this alone. It is a small price to pay for something so valuable! We will try and keep everyone up to date on all schedule changes. We are working on a date to have our Capsule Training Seminar. We will let you know as soon as possible.
Well, it looks like the Morgan City race for the DSRA will not happen. The President of the DSRA, Nick Giardelli, stated that the local Game & Fisheries as well as the Coast Guard, are having a small dispute of the right of way and will not issue any permits.
Highlands is still up in the air. The club building suffered major damage due to Hurricane Ike and will most likely remain closed long after the April race. We hope to hear soon on if there will be a Fall Classic later this year.
